Zelko Nedic

Born in ex-Yugoslavia, in an industrial city in Bosnia. Zelko Nedic showed early interests in photography in primary school where he attempted his first photography course. At the age of 18, he moved to Belgrade (Serbia) to finish high school. Soon after, he started to work as a hairdresser in a highly established salon, where for the first time, he had the opportunity to work with professional photographers on a fashion photo stories and music videos as a hairdresser and photographer’s assistant. His passion about photography grew into an obsession when he lost all of the images from his childhood during the Bosnian war in 1992. In 2000 he moved to Sydney where he now lives.

Nedic is a self-taught photographer with a penchant the space inbetween perfection and the pathetic, pondering the unchartered territory of what might be, the slightly dirty side of the moment. Nedic’s background is in hairdressing & makeup artistry for haute couture designers including Versace & Vivienne Westwood. His personal photographic

work opened the door to working with Head On to document the Mardi Gras Festival in 2010. His practice of documenting Sydney life saw him invited to submit work for the Australian Centre for Photography for the Subculture Slide night in March 2010. In 2011 Zelko Nedic was one of the finalists in Moran Contemporary photographic prize. In 2013 he was finalist in National Photographic Portrait Prize, National Portrait Gallery Canberra.

"We live in a world now where everything is turned into, produced, consumed and only exists as images. A characteristic of today's societies is that instead of consuming ideas as we did in the past we consume images so they are more liberal, less fanatical but more false. To save my artistic voice from our "advance" society a few years ago i gave up on my digital cameras and started working with wet plate collodion process combining it with hand colouring and drawings. The primary subject of my photography explores the relationship of women in male dominant environments."
